SIMPLE FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS WITH SUPERMARKET FLOWERS
I love flowers, I even did a short internship with a florist after I graduated. Flowers have always been a source of inspiration for my work. There’s something about having fresh flowers in the house that lifts your spirits and they also add a splash of colour and interest. Flowers are also associated with many occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, birthdays and of course weddings and anniversaries.
Supermarket flowers may not always be the finest blooms and the choice of flowers available can be limited, but they are easy to grab when you are doing the weekly shop and often not very expensive.
You can easily turn supermarket flowers into pretty arrangements, whether it be just for you at home, to add some decoration at a dinner party or a gift for someone special.
Picking Flowers
There are many ways to pick your flowers at the supermarket, whether it be by type or colour, but always check them before you buy to avoid damaged stems or bruised blooms. I usually pick a small bouquet that has a some foliage and then a bunch of one flower that is in the bouquet or works in the colour scheme to add to it.
Vase or Vase?
One of the issues with supermarket flowers is they can look really lacking compared to a hand tied bouquet from a florist. This is because you don’t usually get all the foliage that is used to create structure and support the blooms, so when you put your flowers in a vase it can look sparse. I try to use tall drinking glasses, glass pots and jars, jugs and occasionally mugs.
The benefit of using a smaller vessel than a regular vase is that you create a more compact arrangement of flowers, which is great if you don’t have much foliage.
Carnations, for example, when bunched tightly together creates a totally different look to a spray of them.
Tulips, when placed in a smaller necked vessel keep more upright making the arrangement look fuller.
Chrysanthemums when looked after properly will last ages and they come in many colours. If you get spray chrysanthemums, you can strip off the lower flowers on the stem and use these in a small glass or little bud vase.
Roses are another classic flower you will always find at the supermarket. They have sturdy stems so work well as support when combined with other flowers.
Saying it with flowers
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic we have had to change the way we celebrate special occasions for the time being. With Valentine’s Day less than a month away, followed by Mother’s Day a month later on Sunday 14 March (UK 2021), we have to be more creative with how we show our loved ones how much they mean to us.
Sometimes it’s the small things that speak more. For example if someone loves going out for afternoon tea, why not treat them to locally made macarons paired with colourful bunch of flowers in arranged in a bone china jug that they can keep and remind them of you when they use it.
Breakfast in bed is also a lovely treat, why not have croissants with their favourite hot beverage in a new bone china mug for the occasion.
If you would rather all year round colour you can opt for faux flowers.
So next time you are doing your food shop at the supermarket, why not have a look at the fresh flowers and see if you are inspired to create something to brighten up your at home workspace or brighten someone else’s day.
