SHOP SMALL THIS CHRISTMAS
After taking a break from markets this Summer, the past 2 months have been focused on organising the London Local Autumn Market at Mick’s Garage with Crate Brewery in Hackney Wick. The success of the Spring Market gave the team a big boost in confidence, however a totally different venue and location almost felt like we were starting from scratch. Team work prevailed and the event on Sunday 23 October was a huge success. Organising markets has made me more aware that it's not just about selling your products, but also selling the event itself and getting the community involved.
With Christmas looming and only 8 weeks away, most of my weekends will be fully booked with various markets across London! It feels good to get back out there with my products. However I’m still not keen on doing the hard sell, as I like to treat customers how I like to be approached when I'm shopping. Customers today are bombarded with choice, from the high street to online. This vast array makes it even harder for small businesses and independent shops to compete for attention. The Just A Card campaign aims to encourage people to support independent shops, galleries, designers and makers. The campaign was spurred into action after founder, artist and designer Sarah Hamilton read this quote:
“If everyone who’d complimented our beautiful gallery had bought just a card we’d still be open.”
Every sale means a lot, so why not shop small this Christmas and support your local high street and explore local markets and maker events.
